A Life In Spoons

Spoons will be the first, and maybe the last utensils used to feed us. Silver spoons are traditionally given as Christening presents to babies. In Wales, intricately carved wooden Love Spoons are given as tokens of romantic intent.

Many people acquire a collection of odd, quirky spoons over a lifetime. Between the Covid ‘lockdowns’, I borrowed spoons from friends and relatives as subject matter for these small, painted compositions. Every spoon is different. I requested that they should not be polished, as I like to include the patina of age.

I have used oil paint over a collaged newspaper background in order to get a strong contrast with the shiny metallic quality of the spoons.
